BIOGRAPHY
Born into a family with deep musical traditions in Ghent, Belgium, and of Colombian and Russian descent, Pablo Laporev’s passion for music became evident from a young age. He began his cello studies under the guidance of his father, Ilia Laporev Sr., and the renowned Belarusian pedagogue Vladimir Perlin, while also learning the fundamentals of cello playing with the esteemed Belgian teacher Hans Mannes. His musical education led him to the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, where he studied as a precollege student with France Springuel and Justus Grimm. He continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, Germany, where he was mentored by the celebrated cellists Maria Kliegel and Johannes Moser. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, under the guidance of Giovanni Gnocchi.
Throughout his journey, Pablo has participated in masterclasses with some of the world’s most renowned cellists, including Gautier Capuçon, Frans Helmerson, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Troels Svane, Gustav Rivinius, and Jérôme Pernoo. His artistry has been recognized through notable achievements such as receiving a scholarship from the Villa Musica program in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, winning 3rd Prize at the International Cello Competition VŠMU in Bratislava, Slovakia, 2nd Prize at the X Agustin Aponte International Music Competition in Tenerife, Spain, and most recently, 2nd Prize at the Karl Davidov Competition in Latvia.
As a soloist, Pablo has performed with orchestras such as the Cappella Istropolitana Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Slovak Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga. His versatility allows him to deliver performances across a broad spectrum of styles, from Baroque to contemporary works, and he is known for his expansive sonority, musical depth, and attention to detail. Chamber music also plays an essential role in his artistic life; he has worked and studied with esteemed musicians such as Harald Schoneweg, Ralph Manno, Anthony Spiri, Connie Shih, and Pavel Gililov.
Alongside his performance activities, Pablo has developed a strong interest in teaching. He sees working with young musicians as a meaningful responsibility and is committed to sharing the knowledge he has gained through his studies and experiences. Outside of music, he enjoys cooking, spending time outdoors, and has a particular interest in history and culture. Pablo currently performs on an Italian cello crafted in 1915 by Dante Baldoni, a family heirloom passed down from his father.
